Finish Ekramul murder trial within six months

The Supreme Court yesterday directed the lower court concerned to finish the trial proceedings of Feni's Fulgazi upazila chairman Ekramul Haque killing case within six months. 

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order after hearing a government petition against a High Court order  that granted bail to Jahangir Kabir Adel, an accused in the case.

The SC also extended its chamber judge's order that stayed the HC order granting bail to Adel.

The apex court said the lower court would consider the bail prayer of Adel if the latter cannot complete the trial proceedings within six months, said Deputy Attorney General Khondker Diliruzzaman.

Ekram, also the president of the Fulgazi upazila unit of Awami League, was shot and burnt to death in his car in Feni town on May 20, 2014.

His brother Rezaul Haque Jasim filed the murder case with Feni Model Police Station the same day, accusing 30 to 35 people, including Adel.

Following a bail petition filed by Adel, a local AL leader in Feni, the HC on January 16 last year granted him bail in this case.

Later, the SC's chamber judge stayed the bail order following the government petition against it.
