Eleven fishermen, who were kidnapped by robbers for ransom from the sea in Noakhli's Hatiya on Thursday morning, were rescued by Chittagong police from a char of the Bay of Bengal in the district's Banshkhali upzila yesterday afternoon.

Robbers racked up a total of Tk 1.40 lakh through bKash as ransom from families of the fishermen, and left them confined in a cabin of their fishing boat anchored at a char of the upazila's Gandamara union, said Swapan Kumar Majumder, officer-in-charge of Banshkhali Police Station.

On information by locals, police rushed to the spot and rescued them, said the OC, adding that the robbers managed to flee the scene sensing the presence of police.

However, handing over of the rescued to their families is still underway.
