Sixty dilapidated and risky buildings in Khulna city have to be demolished immediately, demanded speakers at a human chain on Friday.

The human chain was formed by Janauddog, a citizens' forum, at the city's Picture Palace Intersection, protesting the tragic death of a schoolgirl.

Abeda Arefin Shapla, 14, a class VIII student of Iqbal Nagar Secondary Girls High School, was killed when the roof of their two-storey dilapidated building on Ahsan Ahmed Road collapsed on her on June 27, 2015.

A total of 60 buildings were identified as dilapidated by a committee of Khulna City Corporation in 2004. The committee recommended demolishing all of the risky buildings as early as possible.

The speakers urged the KCC authorities to take steps to demolish all the listed vulnerable buildings which were declared abandoned.

Chaired by Janauddog convener Advocate Kudrot-e-Khuda, the programme was addressed, among others, by central member of Krisak League Shyamol Singha Roy, income tax lawyer SM Shahnewaz and Khulna University Prof Sheikh Sadi Bhiyan.
