Ctg mayor promises action against BCL men
Chittagong city mayor and Awami League leader AJM Nasir Uddin yesterday assured journalists of ensuring organisational action against the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men who attacked and humiliated an on-duty photojournalist of the daily Prothom Alo recently.
He gave the assurance while addressing a rally of the Chittagong Union of Journalists (CUJ) at Chittagong Press Club, organised to protest the attack on Jewel Shill, a photojournalist of Prothom Alo's Chittagong Bureau.
At the beginning of the rally, Ejaj Yousufi, president of CUJ, raised various demands including expulsion of the BCL attackers from the organisation and their arrest.
On February 17, BCL activists of Chittagong Medical College (CMC), led by its President Rashedul Islam, attacked the photojournalist at the city's Prabartak intersection. He was taking photos of the BCL men beating an innocent motorcyclist during a road blockade by the student organisation. The attackers also snatched his camera, deleted the photos, beat him with hands, and humiliated him in front of a large crowd.
Mayor Nasir Uddin termed the attack an "unforgivable offence".
"I have already told the CMC BCL to take organisational action against those involved in the attack," he said, adding that he would ensure it.
