Court to decide on charges July 8

A Dhaka court will decide on July 8 whether charges will be accepted against 42 accused including Sohel Rana in two cases over Rana Plaza building collapse that killed at least 1,136 people on April 24, 2013.

Responding to a verbal appeal of Additional Public Prosecutor Anwarul Kabir Babul, the court ordered Kashimpur prison superintendent to show cause why Sohel Rana was not produced during yesterday's proceeding.

Three cases -- one for violation of building code, one for culpable homicide and another for murder -- were filed in connection with the collapse. Later, the murder case was merged with the homicide case.

Criminal Investigation Department on June 1 pressed murder charges against 42 people including the building owner Sohel.

Yesterday, 19 accused, now on bail, appeared in the two cases while another accused, now in Kashimpur jail, was also not produced before the court. Other accused are absconding.
