Court asks for report on Koko's death

A Dhaka court has asked officer-in-charge of Cantonment Police Station to submit a report by June 10 on the death of BNP chief Khaleda Zia's younger son Arafat Rahman Koko to decide whether to close a tax evasion case against him.

According to law, a criminal case against a deceased person is to be closed.

Koko died of a cardiac arrest in Kuala Lumpur of Malaysia on January 24, but the court is yet to receive an official document from police informing it of his passing. Court sources said Judge of the Special Judge Court-7 of Dhaka passed the order on April 27.

The National Board of Revenue filed the case against Koko on March 1, 2010 for allegedly evading an income tax of Tk 52.39 lakh between 2002-03 and 2006-07.

He had been arrested in 2007 but he was paroled the next year and travelled abroad, never to return. His parole was cancelled in August 2010.

Koko faces a total of six cases including the aforementioned one. In a money laundering case, he was sentenced to six years in jail on June 23, 2011.
