Ranajit Barua, officer-in-charge of Pahartali Police Station, was sued yesterday for his alleged involvement in assaulting a woman and threatening her to withdraw a case filed against two of her neighbours.

Nurjahan Akhter Juli, a resident in Dakkin Kattali area of Chittagong city, lodged the case against the OC with the court of Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Rahamat Ali, said Additional Deputy Commissioner Kazi Ibnu Muttaki Minan.

Taking the case in its cognizance, the court directed to investigate the case by a police official not below rank of additional police super, ADC Minan added.

Earlier, Juli had filed a case against her neighbours Sultan and Imtiaz for torturing her brother Sajibul Islam following an altercation, said complainant's lawyer Advocate Moazzem Hossain Patoari.

On January 11, the OC called Juli's father Tazul Islam to the police station and forced him to withdraw the case filed against Sultan and Imtiaz.  As Tajul refused, the OC along with the two others accused physically assaulted Juli on Thursday and threatened to file a false case against her, Moazzem added.

Contacted, Ranajit Barua said the conflicting neighbours had longstanding disputes over establishing supremacy in the area and filed several cases against each other.

On January 14, both parties locked into an altercation, and later came to me to resolve the dispute, he added.

"I was sued intentionally as I did not give her undue advantage, and the case had no base," he claimed.
