Charges yet to be filed after one yr
Today marks one year of the shooting death of Chittagong University student Taposh Chandra Sarker during a factional clash of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), but police have neither nailed the prime accused nor submitted the charge sheet yet.
Police had earlier said charges would be submitted by December 14. Now they sought more time to prepare the charge-sheet. "Our job is almost done; we thought we would be able to submit the charge-sheet by December 14 but one of the 30 accused of the case claimed that he was not in the country at the time of the clash on December 14 last year," said investigation officer (IO) Mustafizur Rahman Chowdhury, an inspector of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI). "So we are now verifying his claim and I expect it would take just a week to prepare and submit the charge-sheet," he told The Daily Star.
On December 14 last year, Taposh, a student of Sanskrit, was hit by a bullet when BCL activists of two CU shuttle train based groups -- Varsity Xpress (VX) and Choose Friends with Care (CFC) -- fought with each other. Taposh, who belonged to CFC, died later.
Of the 30 accused, all BCL men, one is detained now while the prime suspect Ashrafuzzaman Asha, an ex-cultural affairs secretary of CU unit of BCL, is on the run.
