A seven-year-old boy was killed allegedly by his neighbour for ransom at Baot village in Meherpur's Gangni upazila on Thursday night.

Antar Mahmud was a second-grader at Baot Government Primary School and son of Kafirul Islam, an expatriate in the KSA.

Locals found Antar in a jute sack in a classroom of the school with his hands and legs tied and a gag in his mouth around three hours after he had gone missing, said Gangni police.

Dr Taposh Kumar Sarker of Kushtia Medical College Hospital, where Antar was declared dead, said the boy was suffocated.

Sabuj Ali, 19, who is an accused in several criminal cases, including snatching, might have committed the crime, said Officer-in-Charge Akram Hossain.

Antar's uncle Serajul Islam filed a murder case accusing Sabuj, who has been on the run since the incident, he added.

Meanwhile, agitating villagers set fire to one of the houses of Sabuj's family in protest against the incident, the OC said.
