BNP vows post council anti-govt movement

BNP Vice Chairman Maj (retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed yesterday said the party would take to the street after its national council next month to oust the government in the interest of the country.

"BNP will come up with a fitting reply on the street to the critics who say the party has no strength to wage a strong movement against the present government," he told a discussion, "Democracy and Independent Judiciary", at the Jatiya Press Club, organised by pro-BNP Zia Nagorik Forum.

 Criticising the government for not giving permission for using any venue to hold the party's council on March 19, Hafizuddin said, "We want to take to the street in the days to come to overthrow the current fascist government for the sake of the country's people and development."

The country is passing a critical time, he said.

The BNP leader alleged that the ruling party men were violating the electoral code of conduct to ensure the victory of its candidates in the upcoming Union Parishad polls, while the Election Commission was playing a biased role instead of creating a level-playing field. He also said a foreign national, arrested in connection with the recent ATM card scam, told police during interrogation that many ruling party leaders were involved in it.
