Attempt to smuggle Yaba to USA through post office foiled: Police

Police claimed to have arrested four drug traders who were trying to smuggle contraband yaba pills to the USA through the parcel service of the post office.

The arrestees are: Nahid Parvez Tahin 37, Mizanur Rahman Jewel, 38, Mohammad Imam Hossain Khan Rahat, 40, and Rajib Hawlader, 28.

A team of police first arrested the four on Sunday from Banasree area on information that they had gathered there to sell yaba pills. They also recovered 60 pills during the drive, Zulfikar Ali, senior assistant commissioner of (Khilgaon zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

During the search, the official also found a receipt for a parcel to the USA. After they were quizzed, the accused told police that that they had recently collected yaba consignments that came through couriers to Dhaka from Cox's Bazar. They also admitted to try to send those through the General Post Office (GPO) to New York, Zulfikar, who led the drive told the Daily Star.

The police officials with the help of GPO officials later identified the parcel containing the yaba pills and opened it yesterday. They found 2,040 pieces of yaba wrapped in polythene and hidden inside two jeans pants, the police officer said.

Zulfikar said of the arrestees Nahid and Rajib flew to Cox's Bazar on December 2, collected the drugs and couriered those in Dhaka. They returned to Dhaka on December 6 and received the parcel.

Investigation is underway to gather information about the financer and patrons involved in the drug syndicate, detectives said.

A case was filed with Khilgaon Police Station in this regard.
