Ashulia RMG factory suspends 60 workers for making demands
The management of a readymade garment factory at Zamgora in Ashulia yesterday suspended 60 of its workers and issued a show cause notice to them amid demonstrations by the workers pressing for various demands.
Workers saw the notice hung on the gate of Fashion Craft Knitwear Ltd in the morning and began demonstrating there until police arrived and dispersed them. Mostafizur Rahman, director of Ashulia Industrial Police, said additional police were deployed there. The notice said the mentioned workers should give an explanation within 10 working days for making "illegal demands" and carrying out "activities that hindered work".
The workers claimed the demands were within the labour law and the authorities were just trying to stop the demonstrations. The workers had been demonstrating since November 21 pressing for different demands, including a 15 percent increment in their salary from January and payment within the first week of every month. The Daily Star could not contact the factory management despite repeated attempts.
