Accused Rajuk inspector denied bail; sent to jail

A Dhaka court yesterday sent a Rajuk building inspector to jail after he surrendered before it in a murder case filed over the Rana Plaza collapse that killed over 1,000 people in April 2013.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Shahajadi Tahmida passed the order rejecting the bail petition of Md Awlad Hossain after he surrendered seeking bail in the case.

The same court on December 21 last year issued an arrest warrant against Awlad after the investigation officer showed him as a fugitive in the case.

Police on June 1 last year pressed murder charges against 41 people, including the building's owner Sohel Rana, for their alleged roles in the country's deadliest industrial disaster.

Of them, 18 people were also charged for violating building codes in constructing the nine-storey building that housed five garment factories on its upper floors in Savar.

According to the case statement, the shoddily constructed commercial building came crashing down in the morning on April 24, 2013, leaving 1,136 people dead and 1,169 more fatally injured.

Bijoy Krishna Kar, assistant superintendent of police of CID, submitted two charge sheets -- one for killing and another for violating the building codes.
