9 die in road crashes

Nine people were killed and 27 others injured in road accidents in Munshiganj, Narayanganj, Noakhali and Chittagong yesterday, according to police.

Our Munshiganj correspondent reports, two unidentified people were killed and 20 others injured as a bus plunged into a ditch beside Dhaka-Mawa highway in Sholaghar Battala area of Shreenagar upazila in the afternoon.

Agitated locals blocked the highway until local administrations took the situation under control.

Earlier, a bus fell into a roadside ditch in the upazila's Shamspur, killing a youth and injuring five other passengers.

The injured were rushed to Shreenagar Upazila Health Complex.

Meanwhile, motorcyclist Ziaur Rahman of Chapainawabganj died as he was sandwiched between a running truck and pickup in Louhajang upazila in the morning, said Mawa police.

Police seized the pickup of which driver managed to flee.

Our Narayanganj correspondent reports, two people were killed instantly as an oncoming truck rammed into a motorbike when it was hit by a covered van on Madanpur-Bhuluta-Joydevpur road in Sonagaon upazila's Lolati area.

The deceased were Baten, 35, son of Hasan Ali of Noapara in Rupganj; and Taslima, 28, wife of Nannu Mian of Naovita in the upazila.

Our Noakhali correspondent reports, two hermaphrodites died and another hermaphrodite and a CNG-run-auto-rickshaw driver were injured as the vehicle was hit by a bus on Chowmuhani-Feni road in Dokanghar area of Begumganj upazila.

Madhuri, 26, and Nupur, 30, died on the spot. The injured were taken to a local hospital.

Our staff correspondent from Chittagong reports, a man died when a truck ran him over at New Mooring Container Terminal-2 of Chittagong Port in the early hours.

Abul Bashar, 39, son of late Bulu Miah, was a labourer in the container.
