Man detained at CU following female student’s harassment allegation
A man was detained and handed over to the security office of Chittagong University (CU) on Saturday evening for allegedly harassing a female student on the campus.
Police and students said the detainee, Didarul Islam, 34, was later handed over to Hathazari Police Station for legal action. Didarul is a resident of Hamjarbagh in Chattogram city.
Speaking to The Daily Star, the student of Department of Bangla from the 2022-23 academic session said Didarul followed her from the port city while she was coming to the campus to study at the Central Library.
When she reached Kala Jhupori on the campus around 6:30pm, Didarul started harassing her. After she informed her friends about the matter, they detained him and took him to the university’s security office, the student said.
She further alleged that about a year ago, Didarul obtained her personal Facebook ID from a Facebook page and started messaging her.
She had filed a general diary (GD) with Kotwali Police Station about three months ago, the student added.
However, Didarul denied the allegations. He claimed that he knew the student and that they had been in contact with each other. He alleged that she had called him “brother” and borrowed Tk 20,000-30,000 from him on different occasions.
He claimed that the student called him around 4:00pm on Saturday and asked him to meet her on campus. After he arrived, other students attacked and detained him, he alleged.
CU Assistant Proctor Khairul Islam said the student was preparing to file a formal case after allegedly being harassed again despite filing a GD earlier.
Hathazari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zahidur Rahman said some Chittagong University students had come to the police station with the man.
