JU students of two halls clash over shop ownership, 9 injured
At least nine students were injured in a clash between students of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall and Bishwakabi Rabindranath Tagore Hall at Jahangirnagar University (JU) following a dispute over the ownership of shops.
The clash took place around 3:00pm today in an area adjacent to Nazrul Hall.
According to witnesses, students of the two halls had been at odds for several days over ownership of six shops located in front of Nazrul Hall.
As the shops are situated in front of Nazrul Hall, its students had been claiming ownership of them. Students of Rabindranath Hall, however, were unwilling to give up their claim to the shops, leading to tension between the two groups.
At one point, the dispute escalated into a clash, with students from both sides chasing and assaulting each other.
Later, members of the university administration and the proctorial body went to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Assistant Proctor Prof Abdus Sattar Joy said, “The students of both halls have been sent back to their respective halls. The situation is calm at present. The administrations of the two halls and the university administration will discuss the matter and reach a logical solution regarding the shops.”
