All public and private universities across the country will remain closed from tomorrow (March 9, 2026) as part of measures to reduce electricity and fuel consumption, according to a directive issued by the Education Ministry.

The decision was taken following an instruction from the Cabinet Division.

In a letter signed by Assistant Secretary Md Sultan Ahmed today, the ministry asked the authorities concerned to inform all universities to implement the decision.

According to the directive, universities will remain closed from March 9 until the dates specified in their respective academic calendars for the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays.

The ministry also issued several instructions to ensure the responsible use of electricity and fuel by officials and staff.

Universities have been asked to avoid using electric lights during the daytime when sufficient natural light is available and to keep doors, windows or blinds open to allow natural lighting.

They were also instructed to reduce the number of lights in use, switch off unnecessary electrical equipment, including lights, fans and air conditioners during office hours, and maintain air conditioner temperatures at 25 degrees Celsius or above.

The directive further asked institutions to avoid decorative lighting, use energy-efficient equipment, limit the use of vehicles and ensure economical use of fuel.
