BUBT observes Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day

Bangladesh University of Business and Technology observed Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day with wreath-laying and a discussion programme.

Students, teachers, officers and staff took part in a morning Prabhat Pheri, says a press release.

Floral wreaths were placed at the temporary Shaheed Minar on the university campus in memory of the language martyrs. Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr A B M Shawkat Ali placed the first wreath on behalf of the university. Departments and university clubs later paid tribute.

A discussion meeting and prayer session were held at the university’s International Conference Center.

Poet Hasan Hafiz, Editor of Daily Kaler Kantho and President of the National Press Club, attended as chief guest. In his speech, he said the spirit of the Language Movement of 1952 inspired the Liberation War of 1971 and later movements. He said the movements were part of the Bengali nation’s struggle to protect its identity and rights.

The programme was presided over by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr A B M Shawkat Ali. He said the spirit of the Language Movement should be reflected in the use of Bangla in modern technology and efforts to present it globally. He added that BUBT was working towards that goal.

During the event, the BUBT Innovation Hub presented a project titled “ByteBuilders”, focusing on the use of technology in Bangla. Researchers from the Research Graduate School — Rakib Hasan, Shahadat Hossain Sani, Abdullah Al Sadnan and Mahbubul Islam — demonstrated robotics applications in Bengali.

The programme ended with prayers for the language martyrs.
