Akij Agro launches fisheries project with Chinese firm in Kishoreganj
Akij Agro & Livestock Limited has signed an agreement with China-based Anhui New Ready Co Limited to jointly launch a modern fisheries project in Kishoreganj, aiming to create new opportunities in Bangladesh’s fisheries sector.
Monowara Begum, wife of the late Sheikh Akij Uddin -- the founder of Akij Group, inaugurated the project recently, according to a press release.
Speaking at the event, Monowara Begum said many popular indigenous fish species in Bangladesh are gradually disappearing, while pollution is affecting the nutritional value of fish.
“It is essential that we preserve these native fish in a healthy and safe manner for future generations, and the time to act is now,” she said.
She also expressed hope that the initiative would contribute to fish production and preservation, employment generation, and improvements in local living standards.
Representing the Chinese technical partner, Bao Haixin, director of Anhui New Ready Co Limited, attended the agreement signing ceremony.
Sheikh Shamim Uddin, chairman of Akij Ventures, described the joint venture between Akij Agro & Livestock Limited and Anhui New Ready Co Limited as a milestone for Bangladesh’s fisheries industry.
He said the project would help meet domestic demand for indigenous fish, expand the presence of Bangladeshi fish in international markets, create new demand, and strengthen the national economy.
“Fish is an indispensable part of the daily diet of people in Bangladesh and one of the most important sources of nutrition. Therefore, it is essential that the fish we consume be safe,” he said.
“With safe food as our guiding principle, we are working tirelessly to ensure this commitment is fulfilled,” he added.
The joint venture is expected to contribute significantly to the development of Bangladesh’s fisheries industry by introducing modern technology and international expertise to ensure safe, sustainable, and efficient fish farming practices.
Syed Zahurul Alam, chief executive officer of Akij Agro & Livestock Limited, and Md Maruf Ahmed, head of agro business at Akij Venture Group, along with other senior officials from both organisations, were also present at the event.
