Poultry farmers losing Tk 2 per egg: state minister

Govt will extend support to the small-scale poultry farmers, he says

Small-scale poultry farmers across the country are currently incurring a loss of Tk 2 on every egg sold, said Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, state minister for fisheries and livestock.

Farmers are forced to sell each egg at Tk 7 while the production cost is around Tk 9, resulting in a loss of Tk 2 per egg, he said.

As a result, the government has decided to extend support to the sector, the state minister added.

He made these remarks during a discussion on the livestock sector held at InterContinental Dhaka today.

The minister emphasised that sustaining small farmers is crucial, as the survival of large farmers also depends on them. He stressed the need for collective efforts to advance the country’s development.

The government, he said, will continue its comprehensive support for the poultry sector and aims to transform it into an export-oriented industry by 2030.

He further noted that vaccines are imported by both the government and certain organisations, and importers must handle their responsibilities with due caution.

He also called for ensuring a “win-win” situation across the value chain—from farmers, feed producers, and hatcheries to marketers—so that consumers are not burdened with excessive prices.

Md Delwar Hossain, fisheries secretary, also spoke at the event.
