Netherlands embassy launches ‘Beyond the Margins’ exhibition

The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands has hosted a photography exhibition, titled “Beyond the Margins” under the Netherlands-supported Green Voices programme.

The exhibition will remain open to visitors for the next three weeks.

Joris van Bommel, ambassador of the Netherlands to Bangladesh, inaugurated the exhibition as the chief guest, according to a press release.

Speaking at the opening, Joris welcomed guests and highlighted the importance of partnerships that create space for diverse perspectives to be shared, heard and valued.

He said that while climate change is often understood through science, policy and statistics, photography offers another way to understand its human dimensions by bringing forward the stories and lived experiences of communities across Bangladesh.

The event brought together representatives from the government, diplomatic missions, development partners, international organisations, academia, civil society, the media and the arts to reflect on the interconnected themes of water, culture and resilience, the release said.

The exhibition features a curated selection of photographs captured by Dieab Mahmud during documentary filming across diverse landscapes and communities in Bangladesh as part of the Green Voices programme.

Curated by Minaal Choudhury, the exhibition draws on a visual archive of more than 3,000 photographs and uses water as its central curatorial lens to explore the connections between people, place and the environment.

Through visual storytelling, it highlights the knowledge, cultures and resilience of communities whose experiences are often underrepresented in discussions on climate change and environmental resilience.

Through “Beyond the Margins”, the Green Voices programme seeks to encourage dialogue and deepen engagement with the stories, knowledge and experiences of communities across Bangladesh.

The exhibition also aims to foster greater appreciation of Bangladesh’s cultural diversity and the varied ways environmental change is experienced across different regions and communities.

Green Voices is a consortium programme supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands that promotes the participation and leadership of women and young people in climate action through policy engagement, evidence generation, innovation, capacity development and public awareness.

The programme reflects the longstanding partnership between Bangladesh and the Netherlands on shared priorities, including water, environmental resilience and sustainable development, the release added.
