The government is going to import 50,000 tonnes of rice after three years.
The cabinet committee on purchase today approved a proposal on buying the rice from a company in West Bengal, India.
The price of the rice will be about Tk 35.27 per kg.
According to Ministry of Food's Planning and Monitoring unit, the food stock has decreased though the country produced record amount of grains last year.
The ongoing coronavirus pandemic and repeated floods this year have caused this situation. Also, the target of collecting paddy and rice could not be implemented during the Boro season.
