Govt aims to raise trade with Russia

Trade between Bangladesh and Russia will increase considerably if the complexities regarding double taxation and banking channels are removed, according to Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi.

"There is a lot of demand for Bangladeshi products in Russian markets and so, Bangladesh wants to increase its exports to Russia," Munshi said while exchanging views with Alexander Vikentevich Mantitsky, Russia's ambassador to Dhaka, at his office yesterday.

So, there is a lot of potential to expand trade with Russia if both countries take the right initiatives, he added.

The commerce minister went on to say that work on establishing 100 special economic zones in strategic points of the country is progressing fast with many of these projects being in the final stage.

"Important companies from many countries have already invested in these while many others are showing interest as the government is providing various facilities to attract domestic and foreign investment," he said.

According to the commerce ministry, Bangladesh exported goods worth $665.31 million to Russian markets against imports amounting to $466.70 million in the 2020-21 financial year.
