War heroine, family members beaten up

A war heroine and her daughter and son-in-law were beaten up in Mymensingh's Fatehpur village on Friday allegedly by two brothers.

Admitted with bruises, the condition of Moymona Khatun, 65, and her daughter Rokeya Khatun, 35, has improved, said Phulpur Upazila Health Complex Resident Medical Officer Dr Pranesh Chandra Pandit.

Rokeya's husband Sekander Ali, 40, was released on Saturday.

Accused Khalil, 30, and Shakil, 25, are sons of Jalil Mahuri and both drive battery-run auto-rickshaws for a living. Phulpur police say they are on the run.

Rokeya alleged to The Daily Star that Khalil had been stalking her two schoolgoing daughters for the last one month.

The family had turned down Khalil's proposal to marry one of her daughters and he has since then been hurling abuses at them whenever he sees them, she added.

Sekandar and Khalil engaged in an altercation over the issue at the local Bogar Bazar and the two brothers started beating him at one point and attacked Rokeya and Moymona when they rushed in, she added.

None at the bazar had come to their aid and they had refused to sit in an arbitration, Rokeya alleged.

The duo was pressing them to withdraw a complaint Sekander filed with Phulpur Police Station on Saturday and threatening them of dire consequences otherwise, she added.

However, in the non-First Information Report, Sekander stated that the duo assaulted them following an altercation over spilling tea.

He told The Daily Star that his wife and daughters had not informed him of Khalil stalking the girls and of the proposal.

Officer-in-Charge Ali Ahmed Mollah said they had started looking into the incident and was waiting for the medical report and that none had been arrested.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Rashed Hossain Chowdhury said the administration would look into the matter.
