Staff Correspondent, Ctg

A 12-year-old boy died yesterday after bookshelves of his school library fell on him in Chittagong.

Joydip Dutta, a fifth-grader of St Placids High School and College in Pathorghata area, was leaving the library around 1:30pm with his classmates, said Brother Rinku Kosta, vice-principal of the school.

He said Joydip's mother Mintu Sarkar is a teacher and the librarian of the school and she was there at that time.

Due to “jostling” of the students, a few bookshelves fell and one of them hit Joydip in the head, the principal said.

Joydip was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival.

Mintu was speechless at the hospital.

According to relatives and school sources, Joydip had no classes yesterday as his second term exams were going on. He went to school with his mother since nobody was home to look after him.

His father Debasish Dutta is a schoolteacher in Anwara upazila.
