Stalking of 12-yr-old: Victim's father fined for not being 'careful'

A mobile court yesterday sentenced a youth to six months' jail for stalking a 12-year-old girl and fined the girl's day-labourer father Tk 5,000 for not being “careful enough” to shield her from harassment.

“The girl used to talk to the man [stalker] from her father's phone at night and it later resulted in her being stalked,” Mohammad Ibrahim, executive magistrate and upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Dhunat upazila, who conducted the court, told The Daily Star.

The girl's father Mofiz Uddin, a resident of Purba Goshaibari, said he had to borrow the money from a village lender on the condition of paying Tk 500 in monthly interest till it is paid back.

“It will take many months for me to pay off the sum,” he added.

The stalker, Enamul Haque, 20, also a resident of the area, had been closely following the sixth grader on her way to and from school for almost a month, said neighbours.

He also beat her up on Sunday evening when she was returning home from school, her classmates told The Daily Star.

“She could have been seriously injured had locals not come to her rescue,” said a student who was present there.

Enamul was sent to Bogra Jail by the court in the afternoon, said Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Dhunat Police Station.
