'Robber' killed in Habiganj 'gunfight'

An alleged robber was killed in a “gunfight” between his cohorts and police in Habiganj Sadar upazila early yesterday.

The dead is Alal Mia, 36, of Sultansi village of the upazila.

The “gunfight” took place around 2:00am when some 20 to 25 criminals were taking preparations for a robbery in Machumia area, said Yeasinul Haque, officer-in-charge of Habiganj Police Station.

During that time, a police team was patrolling the area in a requisitioned car. The robbers intercepted the vehicle mistakenly and opened fire on the policemen inside immediately after realising the mistake.

Police retaliated by firing back, triggering the “gunfight”.

All the attackers but Alal managed to flee. He died on the spot after being shot, Yeasinul said.

Four policemen were also hurt in the incident. They were given primary treatment, added the OC.

Sub-inspector Mizanur Rahman of the police station said Alal was facing ten cases filed with different police station in the district.
