'Robber' killed in 'gunfight' with police

A suspected robber was killed in a “gunfight” with police at Dattopara in Lakshmipur Sadar upazila early yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Russell, 30, son of Abdul Karim of Chhayani Togba village of Chatkhil upazila in Noakhali.

Police recovered an LG, a local pistol, seven rounds of bullets and two sharp weapons from the spot.

Russell along with his associate Babul was arrested with a gun at an abandoned house at Kabirajbari of North Joypur village, said Officer-in-Charge of Chandraganj police Mokhtar Hossain.

Based on information given by him, the police took him to Dattapara in Binodpur on a drive to recover more firearms.

Sensing the law enforcers' presence, Russell's associates opened fire on them, prompting the police to retaliate and triggering a “gunfight”, the OC claimed.

Russell was wounded during the “gunfight” and was rushed to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital where on duty doctors declared him dead.

ASM Mahtab Uddin, district police chief, said Russell was wanted in 20 cases for robbery, murder and other crimes filed with Noakhali police.
