Robber killed in 'gunfight'

An alleged robber was killed in what police claims was a gunfight in Trishal upazila of Mymensingh early yesterday.

The deceased, Ashrafuddin Dhol, 28, of Ragaichati village in Mymensingh's Gafargoan upazila was detained from Kishoreganj around 9:00pm Tuesday night, said Additional Superintendent of Mymensingh police (South) Mohammad Noor-e-Alam.

A team led by Imarat Hossain Gazi, officer-in-charge of Detective Branch of Mymensingh police took along Ashraful Dhol when they raided a den of robbers at Bhaga village in adjacent Trishal upazila around 3:00am the same night.

The robbers started firing at the police prompting them to retaliate, Noor-e-Alam said.

Ashraful suffered bullet injuries in the gunfight and was declared dead after being rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, the police official said.

Police fired seven rounds of bullets and it is yet to be confirmed whether Ashraful was killed by shots fired by the police or the robbers, OC of Mymensingh DB said.

Ashraful was an accused in 14 criminal cases including for murder, robbery and theft filed with Gafargaon Police Station in Mymensingh.

Five of his associates -- Mofizul Islam, 32, Al Mamun, 25, Humayun Kabir, 26, Mithun Das, 23, Manik Miah, 28 -- were detained from the spot and taken to local DB office for questioning.

Ashraful's body was sent to MMC morgue for an autopsy. No case has been lodged as yet.
