Rab seizes cache of arms, ammo
The Rapid Action Battalion early yesterday unearthed two illegal firearms factories and seized a huge cache of arms, ammunitions along with tools and hardware for making firearms at Charan Dwip Dolkhali Para in Chiringa union of Chakoria upazila.
The Rab also arrested six people including a woman in this connection during a six-hour-long drive that started at 4:00am and conducted in different parts of the upazila.
The confiscated weapons and ammunitions include eight SBBL, one DBBL, three locally made rifles, eight shutter guns and 98 bullets.
The arrestees are Abdul Mannan, Ayub Khan, Mohiuddin, Nurul Alam, Nur Ullah and Jonu Ara Begum.
The first three of the arrestees are from Kutubdia upazila, the last two are from Charan Dwip of Chakoria upazila and Nurul Alam is from Chakoria upazila in Cox's Bazar
Maj Mahmud Hassan Tarik, company commander of Cox's Bazar camp Rab-7, said they conducted the drive based on a tip off about a band of arms dealers and machinists who had been manufacturing illegal firearms in the area for a long time.
These dealers had been selling arms and ammunitions to local criminals, arms traders, Rohingya trespassers and robbers who use the arms to commit various criminal activities in Chakoria and adjoining areas, he added.
Cases against the arrestees under applicable laws would be filed with Chakoria Police Station, Maj Mahmud also said.
