Sramik League man killed in Gazipur

Rivals killed a local Sramik League leader after severing his arms below the elbows allegedly over a jhut (leftover pieces of garment fabric) trade feud in the district's Sreepur upazila yesterday.

The dead is Faruk Hossain of Koroitala area in Sreepur. Aged 26, he was a worker at a cigarette depot and the organising secretary of Sreepur municipality Sramik League, a pro-Awami League workers' front.

In another incident, Kaliganj police yesterday recovered the body of an unidentified man from Mirer Bazar area.

Quoting witnesses, Faruk's uncle Rakibul Hassan, general secretary of Sreepur Chhatra League, said his nephew was on his way to work in Keoa Paschim Khanda area. Local youths Sumon, Babul and around 10 of their accomplices intercepted Faruk on Maona-Baropota road in Mosque Crossing area around 9:30am.

They forced him into a vehicle and took him to Koroitola Bazar. They beat him up with iron roads and severed his arms with sharp weapons, he added.

Acting on information, victim's relatives went to the spot and took Faruk to Sreepur Upazila Health Complex. They also carried the severed arms in a bag to the health complex.

A physician at the health complex said the youth was brought dead.

Jabedul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sreepur Police Station, said they were investigating the incident. The body was sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College morgue for an autopsy.

Meanwhile, Kaliganj police said they recovered the body of the unidentified man, aged about 35, from beside the 300-feet road in Mirer Bazar area around 2:00pm yesterday.

The body bore several injury marks. The man's hands and legs were tied with rope.

Law enforcers suspected that criminals killed the man and dumped his body beside the road.
