Govt promotes 256 senior assistant secys

The government has promoted 256 senior assistant secretaries to deputy secretaries and 574 assistant professors to associate professors.

The ministries of public administration and education recently issued separate notifications in this regard.

UNB reports that those promoted in the civil administration are currently posted in different districts, ministries and organisations.

There will be more important transfers, appointments and promotions in key positions of the public administration before the announcement of polls schedule, highly placed official sources said.

They said the government had started rearranging local administrations a few months back, and has made changes in most district and upazila administrations by withdrawing and appointing DCs, UNOs and other officials.

The government has so far transferred and promoted over 700 officials, including in posts of divisional commissioner, additional divisional commissioner, deputy commissioner, additional deputy commissioner and UNO in the past few months, officials said.

Those who are loyal to the ruling party have been given promotions in the posts of secretary, additional secretary, joint secretary and deputy secretary while officials close to the BNP-Jamaat have been given forced retirement.

Currently, there are 76 secretaries and senior secretaries in different ministries, divisions and other top government bodies. But there are 89 designated posts at the secretary level. The remaining posts would be filled by promoting the acting secretaries to the positions of secretaries.

The government is likely to complete all administrative changes in next one week or so because the election schedule is likely to be announced in the first week of November.

The polls-time government would not be able to take any major decisions.  It will carry out routine work while posting and appointments will be done at the advice of the Election Commission.

Only in three weeks till September 20, the government promoted 314 officials to the positions of joint secretary and additional secretary in a civil administration already top-heavy.
