Four BCL men held over attack on AL leader's motorcade

Police arrested four activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on Thursday in connection with an attack on the motorcade of Awami League leader Syed Abu Yusuf Abdullah Tuhin.

The arrestees are Abu Sayeed Rubel, 30, vice-president of Ghatail GBG College Chhatra Sangsad, Titu Miah, 25, Al Amin, 23, and Riaz Ahmed, 21.

According to the case, filed over the attack, Abdullah Tuhin, Tangail AL vice-president,  reached Ghatail  from Dhaka with a motorcade on Thursday night.

A group of assailants attacked the motorcade when it reached Thanapara intersection in the upazila headquarters around 8:30pm.

The attackers beat up Tuhin's car driver Yusuf and also hurled abuse at Tuhin and others. They also demanded Tk 10 lakh from Tuhin as extortion, the case statement said.

Tuhin, who wants to contest the upcoming national elections, filed the extortion case against 14 named and  25 unnamed people the same night, said Amir Khasru, additional superintend of police (Gopalpur Circle) in Tangail.

The police the same night arrested the four and produced them before a Tangail court yesterday afternoon, he added.

Shahiduzzaman Khan, mayor of Ghatail Municipality who was with Tuhin on the motorcade, alleged that the criminals, led by Rubel, attacked the motorcade at the diktat of Shahidul Islam Lebu, convener of upazila unit AL.

Contacted, Lebu, who also wants to contest the upcoming national polls with AL ticket, denied the allegation and claimed that only an altercation took place.

AL lawmaker of this constituency (Tangail-3) Amanur Rahman Khan Rana has been behind bars since he surrendered to a Tangail court on September 18, 2016 in connection with district AL leader and freedom fighter Faruk Ahmed murder case.
