251 lives lost in floods in last 2 months
A total of 251 people died in 33 flood-hit districts in the last two months, said a report by the National Health Crisis Management Unit of the health directorate.
Majority 210 of the dead were drowned, according to the report which has compiled these deaths between June 30 and August 27.
Among others, 13 died from lightning strikes, 25 from snake bites, one for diarrhea, and two others of wound.
According to the report, a total of 57,301 people fell sick in different disease including diarrhea, skin disease, inflammation of the eye, tracheal inflammation.
Of them, the highest 57,301 suffered from diarrhea.
As of the end of July, around 37 percent of the country's total area has been flooded, according to Prof AKM Saiful Islam of Buet's Institute of Water and Flood Management.
People of low-lying areas were the worst affected victims of this natural disaster.
Many of them were waterlogged for over a month.
In 1998, around 68 percent of the country was inundated, 61 percent in 1988, 42 percent in 2007 and 2017, and 38 percent in 2004, Prof Saiful mentioned.
This year, over 50 lakh people of 150 upazilas in 31 districts have been affected by the flood, according to the latest report of National Disaster Response Coordination Centre.
