Nasirnagar Attack: Ankhi freed on bail

Dewan Atiqur Rahman Ankhi, an alleged organiser of the hate attack on Hindus in Brahmanbaria's Nasirnagar last year, has been released on bail. He was in jail for about four months.

Ankhi, chairman of Haripur union parishad, walked out of jail on Thursday as the High Court had granted him bail after verifying all necessary documents, said Nurunnabi Bhuiyan, jailer of Brahmanbaria district jail.

On March 13, the HC bench of Justice Naima Haider and Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman gave him ad interim bail.

On January 5, a team of Bhatara Police Station in Dhaka arrested Ankhi, also a leader of district unit Jubo League, in Bhatara. Later, he was handed over to Brahmanbaria police.

He was shown arrested in a case filed with Nasirnagar Police Station over vandalising the Gouramandir in the upazila.

On October 30 last year, religious zealots carried out attacks on the Hindus and vandalised over 100 homes, 17 temples and looted valuables from houses of the minority community people in Nasirnagar over an anti-Islamic Facebook post.

The attackers also beat up over 100 people of the community.

Ankhi allegedly arranged 14 to 15 trucks that carried attackers to Hindu villages in Nasirnagar.
