Man murders 10-year-old after failing to rape her

A youth hacked a schoolgirl to death in Bogadubi village of Kishoreganj Sadar upazila yesterday after failing to rape her, police said.

The victim is Fahima Akter, 10, daughter of rickshaw puller Nazrul Islam of the village. She was a class-IV student at Bogadubi Government Primary School.

Quoting the victim's family and neighbours, Murshed Zaman, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Kishoreganj Sadar Police Station, said Bazlu Mia, 22, and his mother, a beggar, had been residing in Nazrul's house for long.

Bazlu, an alleged drug addict, attempted to rape Fahima at her room around 7:00am. When the girl started screaming, Bazlu might have told her to stop. As she did not stop screaming, Bazlu hacked Fahima, killing her on the spot, said the OC.

Hearing her screams, Fahima's grandmother Khursheda Begum rushed in and tried to save the girl. But Khursheda was also stabbed. She was admitted to Kishoreganj General Hospital in a critical condition, the police official said.

Locals then caught Bazlu while trying to flee and handed him over to police.

On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Kishoreganj General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Victim's father Nazrul filed a case against Bazlu with Kishoreganj Sadar Police Station.

Khandaker Shawkat Jahan, officer-in-charge of the police station, said Bazlu admitted to the killing of Fahima.
