JMB man killed in 'shootout'

An alleged member of outlawed militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) was killed in a “gunfight” with police in Bagerhat Sadar upazila early yesterday.

Acting on a tip off, a joint team of detectives and Bagerhat Model Thana police raided Rasulpur Bridge area around 1:00am, said Pankaj Chandra Roy, superintendent of police in Bagerhat.

Sensing the presence of law enforcers, miscreants opened fire and hurled crude bombs at the police vehicle, triggering a “gunfight,” he added.

At one stage, the attackers fled the scene leaving one of their cohorts with bullet wounds, he informed.

The unidentified injured JMB suspect was whisked off to Khulna Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, the SP said.

The police claimed to have recovered two firearms, three hand bombs and several bullets from the spot.

Three cases have been filed under the Arms and Explosives Act and for obstruction in discharging government duty with Bagerhat Model Police Station.
