CEC to meet president today
Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad will hold a "courtesy meeting" with President Abdul Hamid today.
"The meeting will be held at the Bangabhaban at 3:30pm,” Joynal Abedin, press secretary of the president, told The Daily Star.
He, however, did not go into detail about the meeting's agenda.
Contacted, Election Commission Secretary Muhammad Abdulla said only the CEC would hold the meeting with the president. Neither any other election commissioners nor any officials of the commission would be present there.
The meeting is going to be held at a time when a debate is going on over the reconstitution of the EC.
The ruling Awami League wants the new EC to be formed by a search committee under the jurisdiction of the president, a power vested in him by the constitution, while BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has recently come up with a proposal for reconstituting the EC on the basis of "consensus" among all political parties.
The tenure of the incumbent EC will expire in February next year.
