3 pro-AL SC lawyers meet chief justice

Three eminent Supreme Court lawyers and Awami League leaders met Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha at his SC office yesterday.

The lawyers -- former law minister Shafique Ahmed, AL presidium members Yusuf Hossain Humayun and Abdul Matin Khasru, also a former law minister -- called the meeting a “courtesy call”.

The meeting, which took place in the wake of the apex court's verdict on the 16th amendment, discussed how to uphold the rule of law and dignity of the judiciary.

The chief justice and the lawyers agreed there should not be any conflict between the judiciary and the executive and that every organ of the state should perform from their respective constitutional positions.

Shafique told The Daily Star that the chief justice felt that the lawyers could play a significant role in resolving any conflict between the judiciary and the executive.

Yusuf said that at the meeting he expressed opinion that some of the observations the SC made in its 16th amendment verdict were irrelevant, and those were being used politically.

Khasru told reporters that everybody should be cautious about making statements so that the rule of law and the image and dignity of the judiciary were protected.
