The Gentle Giants: How our fathers loved us without saying a word

Bangladeshi fathers, particularly those who came of age in the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, weren’t built for emotional declarations.

The big Eid detox: Because that wasn’t just one cheat day

#Perspective / The big Eid detox: Because that wasn’t just one cheat day

While you should indulge because, let’s be honest, Eid is about love, family, and licking rezala off your elbow, it’s not a bad idea to also plan a bit of a comeback. A soft, digestive reboot.

Views / Crushing progress: The e-rickshaw dilemma in Dhaka

In the chaos of Dhaka traffic, one vehicle has quietly taken over: the battery-powered three-wheeler, often called the ‘Tesla’, not the sleek one from Silicon Valley, but the Bangladeshi kind.

Curated Cars

Curated Cars: The Dhaka Car Show that finally got it right

May 1 and 2 gave us something rare. A proper show. Curated Cars wasn’t just another excuse to hang out and say, “Bro, my car faster.” This was for the real enthusiasts—the ones who actually know what a Jaguar S-Type is and don’t think a McLaren is just a footballer. So what did they do differently?

The Flying Slipper: A tribute to moms, discipline, and the gentle art of terror

This Mother’s Day, celebrate the iconic South Asian flip-flop — more than footwear, it was a symbol of maternal authority, discipline, and reflex training, shaping generations with precision throws, psychological warfare, and unforgettable love wrapped in chappal justice.

Boredom busters and content verification

Among Us is the biggest hit game this year. The indie game has a team of players work together to performing simple tasks on three available maps. There are randomly assigned “Imposters” who will have to directly, or indirectly, kill the other players without getting caught.

Does it blend?

Our lives. We step back and think, do we want to blend in? Or stand out? Or take the path less travelled whether anyone notices or not? Study hard, become a doctor/engineer and buy a boring Toyota Allion to show you’ve arrived.

2020 is a gamer’s paradise

Back in the early 2000’s I used to head out to Eastern Plaza in Dhaka with my pocket full of hard earned savings to buy games to play. Cracked games mostly and the occasional originals for consoles shared by friends. Wow, those were expensive. And when all else failed, it was time to head out to the shady, makeshift, sweat smelling street corner shops with arcade machines. That still cost money. Two taka per game would add up to many, many ‘monies’.

Apple ditches the charger: Smart or outright madness?

Apple decided to leave out their phone charger as they sell the new iPhone 12. People went nuts and the meme community had a field day for about a week. In normal human terms, that week is like several hundred years’ worth of #lols at Apple’s expense. But who really got the last laugh?

3 personal safety apps for travelling

A woman can’t really walk through the city streets alone without feeling that uneasy need to look over the shoulder. Bangladesh saw an increase in rape by 19 percent from 2018 to 2019. This year seems to be competing with incidents of sexual assault, kidnapping and violence against women and children. Following are a list of personal safety apps that that are a no-brainer for women that need to increase their chances of safety while travelling.

How many computer case fans is too many?

Heat is the biggest enemy of a custom PC build. An average CPU temperature should be within 75-80 degrees Celsius. Poor heat management can see temps climbing past 100 degrees resulting in slowing down becoming an indoor BBQ pit.

As a tiny five-year old in the ’80s, I first discovered and liberated an Archie comic from a teenage cousin the way oil rich countries are liberated: by force. I used superior tactics of crying, pleading, whining and bargaining.

Editor's Note

Movies depict robots as the all-conquering machines that eventually put an end to humans. Sometimes they start off as tools of humanity, helping make coffee and driving us quickly to our destinations.

Come back stronger or be left out

Corona is running scared in our homeland. Or so suggests a high ranking person of authority. Whatever the numbers, our people can’t be held back. The need to eat for survival far outweighs the need to stay inside safe from marauding viruses.
