Microcel, a techno- logy company, will introduce Stereo 3D (Three Dimension) computers in the local market. This was announced at a press conference held recently. The computers are equipped with 3D hardware, glasses and necessary software to let the users work, play video games and watch movies using Stereo 3D. The computers will be available in the local market from September this year.

At the press briefing, Mamun Chowdhury, managing director of the company, spoke about the potentials and benefits of the Stereo 3D computers. Later, the uses of such 3D computers were demonstrated to the attendees.

The main uses of a 3D computer are for entertainment, education and business purposes. Playing video games using Stereo 3D is a lot more enjoyable to gamers as it looks more realistic and results in a deep immersive experience. Watching movies in Stereo 3D is also a very satisfying experience: in 3D movies, pictures jump out of the screen, float around the viewer, making it seem as if everything is happening around the viewer. 3D seems to be enjoying a wave of popularity in the recent years, with the new Mars landscape 3D images coming from NASA and in the movies, such as the Spy Kids 3D, Shrek 3D and even James Cameron's Titanic 3D film at the Imax.

3D images and videos also have educational uses. It looks very realistic and students get more focused and interested. Microcel claims schools and colleges can teach students subjects like Biology, Botany, Earth Science, Architecture, Engineering, Mining and Space Science using 3D computer labs.

Stereo 3D also has potential uses in business presentations. According to Microcel, a real estate or architectural firm can develop a model of a building or project in Stereo 3D and can take their clients to a virtual 3D tour around the building or construction. As Stereo 3D is much more realistic and interesting than a 2D presentation, Microcel believes it will help companies to stir up interests in the minds of their clients.

There are other uses too, of course. Local companies can develop applications in Stereo 3D for the international market using Microcel's 3D computers. In fact, Joint Animation Expert Group Organisation (Jago), a team of experienced local animators, is already working on producing Stereo 3D and 3D anaglyphs.
