42 injured in Lankan train collision

The accident occurred on Tuesday at a railroad station in Kalutara, a town about 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of the capital, Colombo, said police spokesman Rienzie Perera.

Perera said a passenger train had crashed into back of another commuter train halted at the station during busy office hours.

Forty-two passengers, many with minor injuries, were taken to the region's main government hospital, a spokesman said on condition of anonymity due to policy.

Sri Lanka's aging railway system, introduced by its former British colonial rulers, is used daily by tens of thousands of office workers and tourists.

The service suffers from a lack of regular maintenance and management, and from frequent strikes by railway employees.
