HSBC cleans Dhanmondi Lake area

Dhanmondi Lake area is one of the city's prime green spots and everyday many people visited the area. HSBC decided to hold a daylong cleaning programme at this place to observe World Environment Day.

Steve Banner, Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Bangladesh, along with another 60 Bank staff and 50 student volunteers took part in the cleaning operation. HSBC had invited the 50 students from different universities to participate in the Bank's initiative to raise awareness among the students.

The volunteers gathered at the designated place in the Lake area at 7:00am in the morning and the cleaning drive went on until 4:30pm in the afternoon.

In 2002, The HSBC Group launched Investing in Nature, a $50 million environmental initiative. By making the largest ever single donation to three charities, Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) and Earth watch, the Investing in Nature programme aimed to breathe new life into the world's major rivers, protect endangered species and fund conservation research and education around the world.

As part of the Earthwatch initiative, more than 30 HSBC staff have travelled to various places around the world including Kenya, Australia, Vietnam, Spain, UK to help nurture and protect the environment over the last few years.

HSBC Bangladesh is showing their presentations in a video at all branches of the Bank to make customers aware of the need to conserve the environment.

Also, in October 2005, HSBC became the world's first major bank to go 'carbon neutral'. It reduced its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to zero by reducing energy use and buying green electricity.
