15 hurt as villagers clash in Khulna

Fifteen people, including four policemen, were injured in a clash between two rival groups at 8:00am yesterday at Kalmibunia under Paikgacha upazila of Khulna district.

Six severely injured were admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital.

The clash occurred following a dispute over possession of a shrimp enclosure.

Police hurled six tear gas shells and charged batons to disperse the unruly people who were locked in clash for over half-an-hour.

According to eyewitnesses, hoodlums hired by Rarhuli UP Chairman Majid Goldar launched attack on villagers who resisted his illegal occupation of a shrimp enclosure at Kalmibunia village. Both the groups used clubs, machetes, brickbats and crowbars during clash.

Police arrested Majid, who masterminded the attack, yesterday afternoon.

Additional security forces have been deployed in the village.
