Ex-Rucsu leaders observe token hunger strike in capital today

Seven former vice-presidents and general secretaries of Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (Rucsu) will observe a token hunger strike at Muktangon in the capital from 10.00am to 1.00pm today to protest the killing of RU teachers, intellectuals and progressive people across the country.

In a joint statement on Friday, they expressed grave concern over the killings of RU teachers.

The Rucsu leaders said Prof S Taher Ahmed of geology and mining department was brutally killed on February 1 in which Mia Mohammad Mohiuddin, a teacher of the same department, and Shibir leader Mahabub Alam Shalehi were involved.

Earlier in December, 2004 Prof Mohammad Yunus of economic department was killed.

The fundamentalists made an attempt on the life of Prof Sanat Kumar Saha, also of economics department, in September 2001.

Jamaat-backed teachers and Shibir men also brutally beat Taposhi Rabeya Hall students in 2004.

Former Rucsu leaders said a 1971-situation has been prevailing on the university campus where the fundamentalists are trying to consolidate their position.

They demanded immediate arrest and trial of the real culprits.

The leaders are Nurul Islam Thandu, Fazley Hossain Badsha, Ragib Ahsan Munna, Shamsul Tuku, Rafiqul Islam, Jahangir Kabir Rana and Ruhul Quddus Babu.
