Ex-Pak PM Sharif arrives in London

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has arrived in London from Saudi Arabia where he has lived in exile since being thrown from power by the regime of Pervez Musharraf.

Sharif, who landed at Heathrow airport aboard a flight from Jeddah on Sunday, left the arrival hall through a side door.

There was no official statement on the reason for his visit to Britain.

A spokesman for Sharif's party, the Muslim League (PML-N), had said his arrival here marked the end of his exile in Saudi Arabia.

"Mr Nawaz Sharif has arrived in the United Kingdom, putting an end to his five-year exile in Saudi Arabia," Nadir Chaudhri told AFP last week when he announced the former Pakistani leader's impending arrival.

Sharif was initially expected to speak to reporters at Heathrow, but the press conference was cancelled and another organised for later in the day.
