Congress loses power in Karnataka

By Our Correspondent, New Delhi
India's main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party is finally all set to wrest power for the first time in the southern Karnataka state in alliance with Janata Dal (Secular) which parted company with Congress leading to the fall of a Congress-led coalition government in the state on Saturday.

Karnataka Chief Minister N Dharam Singh quit Saturday after he failed to move a confidence motion in the state assembly on Friday amidst uproarious scenes by his own Congress Party men.

Singh was asked by Governor T N Chaturvedi to prove majority afresh following withdrawal of support by a majority in Congress' ruling coalition partner Janatal Dal (S) led by H D Kumaraswamy, son of former JD (S) chief and former Indian Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda.

A new JD (S)-BJP government headed by Kumaraswamy, a film producer-cum-distributor, will be sworn in on February 3 after he has been asked by the Governor to face a trial of strength in the assembly within eight days.
