Pro-mayor faction plans hunger strike

The demands include the dissolution of the city committee of the BNP and formation of a new full-fledge committee of Khulna district committee.

Shaharuzzaman Martuza, senior vice-president of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) city unit, will lead the hunger strike.

A list of 112 activists, loyal to Mayor Shaikh Tayebur Rahman, has been prepared to join the hunger strike, said Martuza.

Four ward commissioners -- Kazi Mohammad Rashed, Moniruzzaman Mamun, Gausul Azam and Hafizur Rahman will also participate in the hunger strike, he said.

Martuza said the programme on the indefinite hunger strike is final and aimed to drive out the vested interests group hiding in BNP as agents of Awami League. The dedicated leaders and activists must be brought to limelight ousting the power mongers, he said.

Mortuza said present city committee formed in 1991 has no legal basis to exist any more as per the party constitution. Besides, a full-fledge committee of the district BNP is yet to be formed, although names of its president and general secretary were announced in April, he said.

When contacted, city BNP General Secretary Nazrul Islam Manju said he does not bother and is not afraid at all of the proposed hunger strike. How an accused of CPB leader comrade Ratan Sen murder case can talk about transparency in the party, Manju said.

Manju belongs to city BNP president M Nurul Islam MP faction.

Nurul Islam said "I am not aware of any such programme of indefinite hunger strike."

Shaikh Tayebur refused to comment on the matter saying that 'time will tell everything.'
