Non-govt teachers demand house rent allowance hike

Addressing a rally at Muktangon in the city, they said existing Tk 100 as allowance is nothing but a mockery considering the present price hike of house rent.
The rally was organised by the National Front of Teachers and Employees (NFTE) to protest the government's ridiculous house rent allowance for them.
Taking part in the rally with dummy houses made of hard board, paper, wood and bamboo the teachers said, "With this disrespectful house allowance, which is same for principal down to peon, we can afford houses like this dummy ones".
Principal Kazi Faruk Ahmed, chief co-ordinator and convenor of NFTE, said, "Since 1984 we have been drawing Tk 100 as house rent allowance which was never increased, but the government has increased the salary and allowances of ministers and MP's ignoring our just demand."
The teachers also alleged that the government stopped paying 90 percent basic pay of some two thousand teachers of 376 colleges across the country from May last without giving any notice.
NFTE Convenor Md Azizul Islam, Prof Asadul Haque, Principal Saidur Rahman, Prof Mirza Mohiuddin, Prof Azhar Ali Mia, and Prof Mujibur Rahman also spoke at the rally.
After the rally, the teachers marched towards the Shikkha Bhaban (Education Directorate Building) in a procession which was intercepted by the police in front of Paltan Police Box.
