UNSC extends mandate of Iraq mission for a yr
In a unanimous vote, the council renewed the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), which expires Friday, until next August 11.
UNAMI, which was set up under resolution 1500 of the Security Council of August 14, 2003, fields 344 international civilian personnel and 472 local civilian staffers.
"The United States is very pleased at the council's unanimous adoption" of the resolution, Bolton told reporters after the vote.
He stressed the broader political significance of the resolution, the second on Iraq adopted unanimously by the council in two weeks.
"That's a very positive sign both for developments in Iraq and for cooperation here in the council," he noted.
A week ago, the Council unanimously adopted a resolution condemning "terrorist attacks" as a threat to world peace and security and strongly urging member states "to prevent the transit of terrorists to and from Iraq, arms for terrorists, and financing that would support terrorists."
